Global literacy issues in schools are often debated as literacy is used to measure success in many ways.

Literacy has been defined in many different ways in very different places, and the whole concept of literacy is now entwined with computer technology in many areas, but fundamentally it is the ability to read and write sufficiently well to function in society, understand and organize information in a manner which is understood by your peers. There has been growing concern about global literacy issues in schools, whereby literacy standards have fallen in recent years and more and more students are leaving school and education without having reached a decent standard of literacy. This factor has been recognized by many employers who have noticed a drop in the literacy standards of school leavers.

Basic literacy is an important tool which must be learned first in order to learn many other topics and subjects in schools. The ability to read opens up a whole new world to students, who can then read and learn about a large variety of different topics, history, geography, science, to name but a few, which is all made much easier by the ability to read and write proficiently. While all schools concentrate on teaching young children to read and write in their early education, there are some factors which are thought to be hindering the progress of some students. Class sizes are one important factor, and many teachers and schools have to contend with increasing numbers of students while economic forces have meant less specialist support. The increased number of foreign students who speak different first languages is also a major factor, as without extra help it increases the strain on the schools and education staff who strive to create strong teaching programs.

Global Literacy as a Factor of a Country’s Development

Global literacy rates are studied and held by analysts and experts as an important indication of the human capital of a certain country or region. Many analysts use the literacy rates of the population as an indication of the development and development potential of the area, and with good reason. Literacy rates differ widely between countries and are often directly proportionate to the wealth or urbanization level of that country.

With new telecommunications technology in schools, students can regain their literacy and begin to interact in a world which uses words to communicate ideas.
